Al Ma’mal Foundation for Contemporary Art is a non-profit organization, based in Jerusalem’s Old City, that aims to promote, instigate, disseminate and facilitate the making of art.
Founded in 1997, Al Ma’mal serves as an advocate for contemporary art and a catalyst for the realisation of art projects by organising exhibitions and events. Presentations and creative encounters in the form of film screenings, artists’ talks, public readings and performances are central activities in one of the Foundation’s missions to raise public awareness and understanding of contemporary art and creative practice.
The artist-in-residence programme provides both local and international artists an opportunity to develop, produce and present new work, at the same time as generating cultural exchange and forging new creative links.
Artists also lead art workshops with youth people in and around Jerusalem, to engage them in creative practice and fostering individual thinking.
Al Ma’mal is determined to make Jerusalem a centre for contemporary art, while considering the situation on the ground and the enduring qualities of Jerusalem.
The Residency program provides local and visiting artists, curators and researchers with accommodation and studio facilities, providing a rare space for the creation, development and exchange of creative ideas and projects. The program serves most of all as a meeting place for artists: facilitating creative encounters, discussions and the exchange of experiences and then opening these up to the public, acting as a conduit to the outside world.
In the course of the residencies, our public – both within the region and further afield – is encouraged to engage with activities planned to help create awareness of one’s own cultural difference and uniqueness. Each visiting artist is given the opportunity to propose and focus on a particular project whilst in residence, which may be influenced or inspired by the reality of daily life in the city, the country and the region. Opportunities to work with local artists and the local community during the residencies will be plentiful, and strongly encouraged.
